Body-based trauma therapy with licensed, trauma-trained clinicians — in person in Columbia or virtually across Maryland.
You have talked about it. You understand what happened. And your body still reacts as though it is happening now.
That is not a failure of insight. Trauma is stored in the nervous system, not only in memory — which is why understanding something rarely settles it. Somatic therapy works with the body’s response directly, so your system can finally learn that it is safe.
Or call us — we are happy to talk it through first. (410) 498-8331

Wellness Space Counseling is a group practice in Columbia, Maryland. Our clinicians are licensed in Maryland and trained in trauma-focused approaches including somatic therapy, EMDR, and Internal Family Systems.
We take trauma work seriously, which means we go at your pace, we are transparent about what we are doing and why, and we match you with the clinician whose training actually fits what you are carrying.
Trauma work depends on feeling safe with the person sitting across from you. That is not something you can judge from a directory listing — so we start with a conversation, not a booking page.
The clinician you are matched with will be licensed in Maryland and trained in trauma-focused care.
Not sure who would be the right fit? That is exactly what the free consultation is for — tell us what is going on, and we will match you with the clinician whose training fits what you need.

We start slowly. Nothing happens faster than you are ready for.
Somatic therapy is talk therapy that includes the body. You are not asked to relive what happened, and you are never pushed past what you can hold.
Tight chest before a hard conversation. Shoulders that never drop. Your therapist helps you notice these signals — the nervous system speaking before words arrive.
Trauma work goes wrong when it goes too fast. We move in small, tolerable steps, staying close to what feels manageable and backing off when it does not.
Over time, the body stops bracing for a threat that has passed. People describe sleeping better, reacting less, and feeling present in situations that used to flood them.
Somatic therapy is often a good fit for PTSD, complex trauma, chronic anxiety, and for people who have done talk therapy and found it helpful but incomplete.
Somatic therapy is a form of psychotherapy that includes the body in the work. Alongside talking, your therapist helps you notice physical sensations and nervous system patterns connected to what you have been through, so your body can process what it has been holding.
No. Somatic therapy is clinical psychotherapy delivered by a licensed mental health clinician. It is not massage, bodywork, or a movement class, and it does not replace medical care.
Not unless and until you want to. A great deal of somatic work happens without retelling the event. Your therapist follows your pace and checks in constantly.
Both are trauma-focused and both work below the level of talk. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess specific memories; somatic work focuses on the body’s ongoing responses. Many clients benefit from both, and our clinicians are trained in each.
It varies with what you are working through. Your therapist will be honest with you about what to expect and will revisit the plan as you go.
Yes. Somatic work translates well to virtual sessions. We offer in-person sessions in Columbia, MD and virtual sessions across Maryland.
Wellness Space Counseling is a private pay practice. We do not bill insurance directly, which keeps your care free from insurance restrictions and lets us tailor treatment to you. On request we can provide a superbill you may submit to your insurer for possible out-of-network reimbursement, and we will be upfront about rates on your consultation.
Yes. Sessions are confidential and HIPAA-protected, with the narrow legal exceptions your therapist will walk you through at the start.
