Internal Family Systems therapy with certified clinicians — in person in Columbia or virtually across Maryland.
There is a part of you that wants to change. And a part that is not sure it is safe to. Both of them make sense.
Internal Family Systems therapy starts from the idea that you are not one voice fighting itself — you are a system of parts, each one formed to protect you. The inner critic. The perfectionist. The part that shuts down. IFS helps you get to know them instead of fighting them.
Or call us — we are happy to talk it through first. (410) 498-5556

Wellness Space Counseling is a group practice in Columbia, Maryland. Our clinicians are licensed in Maryland and trained in Internal Family Systems, alongside EMDR, somatic therapy, and Gottman Method couples work.
We are a premium, relationship-first practice. That means longer consultations, careful matching between client and therapist, and no rushing you into a treatment plan before we understand what you are carrying.
IFS is relational work. The fit between you and your therapist matters more than almost anything else — which is why we would rather talk with you first than have you pick a name off a list.

In person in Columbia or virtually — whichever feels easier to start.
IFS is not about digging for what is wrong with you. It is about turning toward the parts of you that have been carrying too much, for too long.
Your therapist helps you notice the parts that show up — the one that gets anxious before a meeting, the one that goes quiet during conflict. We meet them with curiosity rather than judgment.
Every part has a reason. The inner critic is often trying to keep you safe from rejection. Once you understand the job a part took on, it stops feeling like self-sabotage.
As parts feel heard, they relax. The relief people describe is not that the parts disappear — it is that they stop running the show.
IFS is well suited to trauma, anxiety, chronic self-criticism, and the feeling of being at war with yourself. It is also gentle — you set the pace, and no part of you is pushed before it is ready.
IFS is an evidence-based approach that understands the mind as made up of parts — protective, reactive, wounded — alongside a core self that can lead. Rather than trying to eliminate difficult parts, IFS helps you build a relationship with them so they no longer have to run things.
No. IFS is widely used for trauma, but people also come to it for anxiety, depression, chronic self-criticism, perfectionism, and the sense of being stuck in patterns they understand intellectually but cannot shift.
Traditional talk therapy often focuses on insight and coping strategies. IFS works with the internal dynamic directly — which is why people who know why they do something and still do it often find IFS moves something that talking alone did not.
It depends on what you are working with. Some people come for a focused stretch of a few months; others stay longer for deeper trauma work. Your therapist will talk openly with you about pacing.
Yes. IFS works well virtually, and many of our clients prefer it. We offer in-person sessions in Columbia, MD and virtual sessions across Maryland.
Wellness Space Counseling is a private pay practice. We do not bill insurance directly, which keeps your care free from insurance restrictions and lets us tailor treatment to you. On request we can provide a superbill you may submit to your insurer for possible out-of-network reimbursement, and we will be upfront about rates on your consultation.
Yes. Sessions are confidential and HIPAA-protected, with the narrow legal exceptions your therapist will walk you through at the start.
